Ellis Island's Webpage

Ellis Island

I need your help! Check out this webpage I found. It has document images of passenger lists that you can view for free! Just register and it's free to view them. I typed in the last name 'Tremonte" and found 42 names and almost all of them are from San Marco. I don't know who they are but I'd guess they are related some how. Check them out and if you know how some of them may be related to us please let me know.

Here's the webpage: www.ellisisland.org. When you go there it will ask you to sign in and then once you do you can see the records for free.

Here are some things that I found (click on the links to go to the records). If you know how they are related let me know:

  • Angelantonia Palumbo Albanese (b: 1873) record of her coming from San Marco dei Cavoti and going to her husband Angelantonio Albenese at 725 St, Allentown, PA. Angelantonia is the sister to Diodoro Palumbo the father of Adolorata (Dolores) Tremonte. Her children Barbara Albanese (b: 1899) and Pasquale Albanese (b: 1905) also traveled with her. This is definitely a family member, and I know how they are related to us.
  • This is a record of a Diodoro Palumbo and a Antonio Tremonte both going to 725....St, Allentown PA, both from San Marco. They are going to Diodoro's brother Giuseppe Palumbo, who is also Antonio Tremonte's uncle. I have no idea how Diodoro, Antonio, or Giuseppe are related to the family, but they must be because they are going to the same address as Angelantonia Palumbo Albanese (mentioned above).
  • Lots of names from San Marco on this record: Borrillo, Assini, Cocca. Some people are also going to Allentown, PA.
  • This is another record that have a lot of names from S. Marco.

Here are some tips for researching these type of documents:

  • When looking at a document of someone also look at the other people on the list for names that might be in the family.
  • Look at the list of where the people are from on the whole form. There are usually other people who are from San Marco on the same form.
  • Look at the address of where they are going and compare with other people next to them, sometimes they go to the same place as others.
  • On this website when I refined the search and typed in the city San Marco dei Cavoti I got an error message. I finally discovered that putting just 'Marco' in and changing it to 'contains' would work.
  • Click on the ship manifest 'view' to see the documents.
  • The documents often have 2 pages. And on this website they are not in order, so click the preview and next button to find the second or first page. The first page should start out with the names.
Here are some of the names in the family that I search. The numbers next to the names are the number of people I found with that last name. Click on the name and view the list of names. To see the documents click on the ship manifest 'view'. If you know how they are related please let me know. Have fun searching!

Michele Borrillo's First Voyage to the US

Michele Borrillo's First Voyage to the US

Information from first page:

Michele Borrillo left Napoli, Italy on October 11, 1922 on the S.S. Conte Rosso.
His information is on line 11. He is 23 at the time and is married and a farmer. He can read and write. His last permanent address was San Marco dei Cavoti, Italy. He left his wife Incoronata Borrillo in San Marco and his final destination is Holden, West Virginia.

Information from second page:

The ship arrived in New York on Oct 21, 1922 (a 10 day voyage).
Following line 11, he has a ticket to his final destination, he's paying for himself, and he has $50. He has never been to the US before. He is going to join his brother Donato Borrilo at Box 333 Holden, West Virginia. It's typed in that it's undetermined if he plans to say in the US permanently, but it's crossed out and above that is written do, perhaps short for ditto of the above written "perm" for permanent. He says he plans to become a citizen on the US. His health is good, is 5"5', and was born in San Marco dei Cavoti, Italy.

Analyzing the information from both records:

So he arrived in New York and then traveled to Holden, West Virginia. Then sometime between October 1922 to March 1926 he went back to Italy. Then when he arrived back in the US in March 1926 he moved to his brother Donato's new address at 278 W 149th ST, New York, NY (Click on address to see the distance between Holden, West Virginia and this address in NY).

This is what we learn about Michele Borrillo from the documents (click on locations to see on a map):

This is a ship passenger list that left Napoli (Naples), Italy on March 19, 1926. The ships name is S.S. Conte Rosso.

Michele Borrillo is on line 8. At this time he is 27, married and works as a farm hand. He can read and write Italian. He is from the south of Italy. His last permanent residence was New York, NY. He left his wife Incoronata Tremonte in San Marco dei Cavoti, Italy. His final destination is New York, NY.

On page 2 of this same document remember to follow line 8 where the information is about Michele Borrillo. Here's what we learn on page 2.

From the top of the document, the ship arrived in New York on March 29, 1926 (a 10 day voyage).

He doesn't have a ticket to his final destination. He has $25 on him. He has visited the US before. The document says 922/25. I believe this means 1922-25, because of another document when he came in 1922 and it was his first time the US. He came to NY. He is going to his residence at 278 W 149th St. New York, NY. Above this address is handwritten in Bro (meaning brother) Donato. He doesn't plan to remain in his country after working in the US, but plans to become a citizen and remain in the US permanently. He answered no to all the questions about being in prison or being a polygamist or anarchist, or being violent toward the government of the United States or being deported within the year. He said his health was good and he had no deformities. He was 5' 3" tall. His complexion is nat (maybe meaning natural?), his hair and eyes are chest (perhaps meaning chestnut brown?) He has no marks of identification. He was born in San Marco dei Cavoti, Italy. And he received his visa from Washington on October 7, 1925.

Wasn't that fun to learn all that!

Throughout my research I have collected dozens of document images of our ancestors and have now figured out a way to share them with you on this blog. So I will start to post those documents. The documents include passenger lists when they came to the US from Italy, Naturalization applications, war drafts, and things of that nature. So stay turned for that.

Also I've added a "Follow by email" on the right top side of the blog. If you put your email in there just let me know so I don't also send you a forwarded email as well.

In my photo section I have updated Photos: 1, 5, 6, 18, and 36.

From this information we also learn more about the family tree. We learn that Antonietta's husband was Rocco Iacocca, that Libera's husband was Umberto Bologna, and that Nicola Tremonte's wife was Maria.
